Grammar Trick and Word of the Day #15
Today I wanted to share a small grammar trick with all of you that should make it easier to learn some new words. Today's word is "Where". It is used the same way as it is in English.
As you learned already, the words for "Here", "There", and "Over There" are ここ, そこ, and あそこ respectively. Japanese continues to use these beginning sounds when referencing other items or locations. こ would be in your immediate vicinity, そ is near you, and あ is far away. As demonstrated in today's word, ど is used to question. This is very similar to a pattern used in old English words.
We can use the example of "Here", "There", and "Where". "H" is used to identify immediate vicinity, "Th" is used to far away, and "Wh" is used to question. The word we are studying today completes this pattern in Japanese. If you memorize this pattern, it will save you lots of time when learning new words.
Kana: どこ
Romaji: doko
Example
Kanji: 私の本はどこですか?
Kana: わたしのほんはどこですか?
Translation: Where is my book?
