Great Free Apps for Learning Japanese

How to Learn Japanese Apps
Since there was really good feedback to books for learning Japanese, I've decided to make another post for you on what I think are some great free apps for learning Japanese. I have used several apps to look at how people are trying to teach Japanese and I feel these apps offer the best learning experience for all levels of Japanese, are simple to use and understand, and are most importantly, free. They are in no particular order and all of them can benefit you depending on how you like to learn.

Tae Kim's Guide to Learning Japanese (AppleGoogle)

This is probably one of the more well known websites for learning Japanese. As such, an app was created to let you browse the site in a more mobile friendly fashion. Tae Kim's Guide to Learning Japanese covers lots of the nitty gritty grammar rules and explains them in a very understandable way while blending vocabulary into each lesson. Also, the app has added a bookmark feature which lets you mark where you last were and pick up from the next time you're free.

Memrise (Apple, Google, Amazon)

Memrise offers a variety of languages and within each one is a large selection of source materials ranging from study guides, textbooks, and websites. Memrise allows you to set your own goal of how many words you want to learn each day and also sends you reminders to study and when to review words you may have forgot. Japanese is split into two sections, Japanese and Kanji. The Japanese section focuses on reading hiragana and katakana, listening, grammar, and vocabulary. Most of the lessons in the Japanese section are written in either romaji or kana. However, the Kanji section focuses entirely on learning to recognize kanji and their different pronunciations. This is one of my personal favourites and is completely free unless you want to access features which analyze your learning habits and show you words you are having trouble with.

Fun Easy Learn - Learn Japanese (Google, Amazon)

Fun Easy Learn takes 6000 words and organizes them into very defined categories. It does a great job of using multiple teaching methods by engaging you with audio clips, having your recognize characters, and relating the Japanese language to images instead of words. Fun Easy Learn does a great job of covering vocabulary but does not seem to have any options to learn grammar. My only complaints with this app is you can't move to intermediate or advanced words without earning a set number of points in the level before it and it is a little advertisement heavy at times; both which can be removed for a little cash, Facebook like, or by watching an ad.

Final thoughts

There are many apps available to help you study Japanese and you should explore what works best for you and which apps cover what you want to learn. Always look around for free apps or trail versions of paid apps. The last thing you want to do is drop money on something you think is horrible and you'll never use again. I hope I've been able to help you find some great free apps for learning Japanese. Feel free to leave a comment if you think I've missed an app that really outshines these ones or contact me if you have any questions.
