You're going to get two Japanese words again today since you're all so awesome. Given how hot the last word of the day was, I think we should cool off with the opposite word and cool off a bit.
The two Words of the Day are "cold" and "cold".
That's right. There are two different words for the exact same word in English again. But lucky for you, these words follow the same rules as the last Word of the Day. The only difference is these two are pronounced differently.
さむい
samui
This character is used to express the feeling of cold and is commonly found in the sentence
I feel cold. / 私は寒いです。
Again, this is not used to describe things which are literally cold, only the feeling. Just like last time, you can say
Today is cold. / 今日は寒いです。
A day cannot literally be cold because it's time. But things can be described as literally cold by using
つめたい
tsumetai
The same trick for remembering which is which can be used again. 寒い is for when something feels cold and 冷たい is when something is cold.
My hands are cold. / 私の手が冷たいです。
Remember to think if what you're talking about is actually cold or if it just feels cold.
Hopefully this helps you all understand when to use each "cold" in Japanese. Have a great Victoria Day and Patriots' Day everyone!
